The Great Gatsby

  • Neighbor 176 9th Avenue New York, NY, 10011 United States (map)

3 Wednesday sessions from sept 3rd - sept 17th, 2025 7pm-9pm

Published in 1925, The Great Gatsby is widely regarded as F. Scott Fitzgerald's masterpiece and one of the greatest American novels of the 20th century. Set in the summer of 1922, during the glittering Jazz Age and Prohibition era, the novel depicts a society awash in wealth and moral decay, capturing the disillusionment of the American Dream in the post-World War I period.

Through the eyes of narrator Nick Carraway, we witness the desperate romantic yearning of the enigmatic Jay Gatsby for Daisy Buchanan, a woman whose voice is "full of money." As Nick becomes increasingly entangled in the lives of the wealthy Long Island residents, he uncovers the hollow nature of their excess and the corruption beneath their glamorous façades.

We'll examine topics such as the tension between illusion and reality, the corruption of the American Dream, the symbolism of geography and color, the significance of social class, and how the narrative structure itself shapes our understanding of truth, memory, and identity.
