6 Wednesday sessions from April 2nd - May 7th, 2025 7pm-9pm
Published in 1967, One Hundred Years of Solitude marked the culmination of García Márquez's long development as a writer, emerging from his years as a journalist and author of shorter works. The novel, written while he lived in Mexico City after leaving Colombia, took fifteen months of dedicated work. It became an immediate international sensation, selling out its first printing in a week and eventually selling millions of copies worldwide – launching both García Márquez's global literary career and the Latin American Boom.
Drawing on his childhood in Aracataca, where he was raised by his grandparents amid their oral traditions and political histories, he crafted a world that merged historical events with myths and family legends.
We'll examine topics such as the interplay between memory and prophecy, the cyclical nature of violence and love, the power of names and inheritance, and how realities become transformed into myth through the lens of family stories.
